Representative rugby teams from Marlborough, Nelson, Buller and the West Coast first competed for the Seddon Shield in 1906, the year that Premier Dick Seddon died. In August 2010 the Marlborough Express Red Devils, having defeated Nelson Bays 13–12, celebrated their first successful challenge for the shield since 1996.
