This extended family from Vietnam, photographed in Wellington in 1989, included Thach Nguyen and her husband, Tuan Chau Vu (back left), and their four children, baby Tu, Luc, Thanh and Tiem. Thach's parents, Tot Thi Khong and Bot van Nguyen, lived with them. Immigrant families are more likely to include family members of three generations. Grandparents are often involved in the care of children and help them to retain the language and cultural practices of their country of origin.
