The Fruit in Schools programme started in 2006. It was a response to the 2002 Child Nutrition Survey, which found that only 40% of children ate the recommended two pieces of fruit a day. Schools in areas which were identified as having high health needs received free fruit – one piece per child – each school day. These children were fruit monitors at Tāmaki Primary School in Auckland in 2009.
