In 2005 the South Taranaki District Council adopted a policy that discouraged smoking in council-owned outdoor areas such as parks and swimming pools. It was the first council to do this in New Zealand. Since 2005 smoke-free policies in parks, playgrounds and other outdoor areas have been widely adopted across New Zealand.
