A New Zealand team made a 1951 expedition to the Garhwal Himalaya, which led to Hillary and others being selected for the 1951 Everest reconnaissance expedition. Pictured here at camp are Earle Riddiford (left), Hillary (second from left), Ed Cotter (front) and two Nepalese porters.
