Russian Orthodox Church, Christchurch

The feast of St Nicholas on 19 December is an occasion for special celebration at the Russian Orthodox Church of St Nicholas in Christchurch. The 2009 celebrations were attended by Metropolitan Hilarion, the New York-based head of the Russian Orthodox Church outside Russia (left), and a deacon from the Sydney diocese of the church. They are standing behind an icon of St Nicholas, whose generosity gave rise to the legend of Santa Claus.
