The first purpose-built Unitarian church in New Zealand opened in 1901 on Auckland's Ponsonby Road. It remained in active use in 2007, when this photo was taken. Social and seminar rooms were provided as part of the original design, and issues such as socialism, pacifism, prohibition, conscription, free trade and proportional representation were debated. Labour politician John A. Lee, a member of the congregation, thought the church's library was the best in Auckland.
