Liquor bans at holiday spots such as Mt Maunganui are usually just for defined periods such as over New Year's Eve. Many cities and towns have permanent liquor bans on their streets. A major reason for this is that many people feel unsafe in urban environments due to the behaviour of groups of drunk people.
