Janine Milne was travelling with her sister from Warkworth to Palmerston North to start a new term at Massey University in the mid-1980s when they picked up hitchhiker Andrew Gair at Pukekohe. Milne thought when she saw Gair by the side of the road that he was 'a bit of all right'. Once they got to know one another and became involved, they knew they would be friends for life, even if they didn't continue to be a couple. A year after they met, Milne became pregnant. Their baby was born before her divorce from her former partner came through, but three months later, Milne and Gair were married. The photograph shows them in 2007 – still happily together.
