Teen dad, 2006

Some young men become fathers after being sexually active. In 2009 almost half of the babies born to teenage mothers had fathers under 20. Many of these fathers do not appear on the birth certificates of their children and many do not live with them. However, some young fathers develop close emotional bonds with their children and want to be involved in their care. The positive impact on young men of being fathers is increasingly recognised and more community support is available to them. These groups include The Father & Child Trust in Auckland and Christchurch, Teen Fathers Plus in Waitakere and the Young Dads' Group in Auckland. The Family Planning Association has also produced a range of resources for young fathers.
