Frederick Gush, whose police mugshot is shown here, was convicted in 1886 of making a false declaration of marriage. Despite having a wife and several children, Gush had apparently planned to marry ‘a young lady on this coast’ (Hawera and Normanby Star, 16 October 1886, p. 2). He was sentenced to five months in jail.
