These female patients were photographed in 1900, the year after St Joseph's Home for Incurables opened in Wellington. Run by a Catholic order, the Sisters of Compassion, the home cared for terminally ill people as well as the chronically ill and people with severe disabilities. While there was no discrimination on the grounds of ethnicity, those suffering from tuberculosis, epilepsy or asthma were excluded because the facilities they required could not be provided.
