Sunnyside Asylum was one of a number of large mental hospitals built in the 19th century to house both those suffering from mental illness and people with intellectual disabilities. Patients in such institutions were segregated from society and often lost contact with family. The care and treatment they received was minimal. This model of institutional care was not challenged until the later 20th century.
