School cadets stand at attention at Marist Brothers School, Whanganui, around 1910. Provision for not less than 52 hours per year of compulsory military training for boys aged between 12 and 18 was passed into law in late 1909. In some cases Scouts and cadets were integrated as Cadet Scout Troops, but this led to confusion and conflict between scoutmasters and cadet officers. In November 1912 compulsory cadet training for 12 to 14 year olds was revoked and Cadet Scout Troops were abandoned. Boys older than 14 could belong to both the cadets and Scouts, which met separately.
