Bishop Mariu

The first Māori bishop of the Catholic Church, Takiura (Max) Mariu (Ngāti Tūwharetoa), was appointed Bishop of Hamilton at a ceremony at Tokoroa Marae in 1988. Bishop Mariu died in 2005.
