When Linda Jones rode Big Bickies to a win in the council handicap at Te Rapa racecourse in Hamilton in 1978 she achieved a personal and a New Zealand first. She was the first New Zealand woman to win against men as a jockey. There had been some resistance to women riders, and her achievement established women's riding ability. Jones (then Linda Wilkinson) is shown here riding Scots Bard to a win in the 1970 Powder Puff Derby run by the Bay of Plenty Racing Club. This was one of her earliest wins.
