For most of the 20th century, dances were a primary form of entertainment, particularly for people in their teens and 20s. Held by schools, churches and local communities, dances were put on in local halls, and usually included a supper. They were one of the few places where men and women socialised together. This is supper time at a Christchurch Teachers’ College Friday night dance in 1957.
