At 1,875 metres, Mt Owen is the highest point in Kahurangi National Park. As water flows over limestone and marble, it slowly dissolves them. Cracks and other natural lines of weakness grow larger, and caves can develop. Beneath Mt Owen there are many caves, including New Zealand’s longest – Bulmer Cavern, which has over 50 kilometres of explored passages. The mountain is named after English paleontologist Richard Owen.
