At the Grove Scenic Reserve, near Clifton, roots of northern rātā trees hang down among nīkau palms. Northern rātā usually begins its life in forest debris high in tree branches. At the Grove reserve, rātā also establish themselves on the limestone blocks. As the trees mature their roots grow downwards, sometimes enveloping the limestone, and in this case, a tree trunk below.
