During the economic depression of the 1930s, church city missions became prominent in relief work amongst the poor. The Anglican Wellington City Mission, under the leadership of the Reverend Thomas Fielden Taylor, provided assistance to elderly people, ran a men's shelter, and organised summer camps and night schools for young people.
