The Salvation Army became established in New Zealand in 1883 and carried out a wide variety of voluntary welfare activities. One was the establishment of homes for 'fallen women'. These focused on 'rescuing' prostitutes and single mothers, reforming them morally, and providing lodgings while teaching them alternative ways of making a living.
