Promoting Kirkpatrick’s jam

Image
Promoting Kirkpatrick’s jam

Miss Bush poses for the camera in a remarkable outfit advertising Kirkpatrick’s strawberry and raspberry jam and Seville orange marmalade, around 1898. Samuel Kirkpatrick’s jam factory in Nelson was a major employer, especially of women. Jam manufacture was one way of utilising the region’s ability to produce quality fruit and berries, while getting around the problem of fruit spoiling or bruising as it was transported to market.
