Kōrero: Māori–Pākehā relations

Urban hāngī

Urban hāngī

As Māori moved from rural to urban centres after the Second World War, they were forced to abandon or alter many traditional customs. Māori continued to cook food for hui in hāngī (earth ovens), but often in very different surroundings. This photo shows a group of building workers laying down a hāngī in a metal skip filled with earth.
