New Zealand soldiers relax on a ridge during the South African War of 1899–1902. Many Māori were eager to take part in this conflict but they were officially barred from doing so. However some Māori, including H. R. Vercoe, Arthur Te Wata Gannon, William Pitt and 'Tip' Broughton, succeeded in enlisting. All four men later served in the First World War.
