Māori and whaleboats

Light, double-bowed whaleboats were much faster than Māori canoes. Some Māori who used these boats in the whaling industry later preferred them to canoes. These three whaleboats are at the start of a race. They are crewed by Māori – six men on the oars and one on the sweep, or long steering oar.
