In the late 19th century American evangelists from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as the Mormons, won a following in Māori communities in some areas. This meeting took place among Ngāti Kahungunu at Te Māhanga, about 15 kilometres south of Hastings in Hawke's Bay.
