In 1946 Edmund Hillary met Harry Ayres, a respected professional mountain guide, and together they climbed a number of peaks. They were photographed together on the summit of New Zealand’s highest mountain, Aoraki/Mt Cook, on 30 January 1947. Through this and other expeditions, Hillary acquired technical mountaineering skills to complement his superb fitness and outstanding climbing ability.
