This portrait of Edmund Hillary, which he signed, was taken in 1953 by fellow mountaineer John Pascoe. That was the year of Hillary’s historic climb of Everest. His success followed 12 serious attempts by various expeditions since 1921 to scale the world’s tallest mountain.
