Glaxo New Zealand operated vitamin A extraction plants after the Second World War when they had difficulty sourcing the vitamin overseas. Shark livers, which are a rich source of vitamin A, were processed at factories in Wellington and Tīmaru. Fishermen sent livers in sealed milk churns. This plant in Island Bay, Wellington, ran until 1963.
