Participants learn how to build an outdoor pizza oven in a course held at Koanga Gardens, part of Kohatu Toa eco-village, in January 2010. Kohatu Toa, near Kaiwaka, north of Auckland, was one of a growing number of eco-villages in the early 2000s. Its residents aimed to live simply and cooperatively, protect the environment and develop a sustainable economy. They ran courses on self-sufficiency, and had community gardens and orchards.
