The French-born Catholic missionary Mary Joseph (originally Suzanne) Aubert worked in several parts of New Zealand after her arrival in 1860. From the early 1880s she was based at Jerusalem on the Whanganui River. Here she stands with her Pākehā 'foundlings' (orphans and foster children) in 1898. The children were cared for at her Marist mission, the Daughters of Compassion.
