Barely two months after women won the vote, the 1893 election was held. Suffrage groups worked frantically to get women on the electoral roll before it closed. At this New Plymouth polling booth on election day, women can be seen in the crowd around the door and standing talking together in the street. Because behaviour on election day was often rowdy and drunken, many women had previously avoided polling-booth areas.
