Zafar Smith, partly of Samoan descent, graduated from Otago Medical School in 2004 after winning a $10,000 Pacific scholarship in his fifth year. Smith was eager for other Pacific students to follow the same path and not be daunted by the need for six years of training. Here he attends to a hospital patient.
