The Anglican Church has a semi-official status on occasions of national significance in New Zealand. In November 2004 the remains of a New Zealand soldier whose name and religion were unknown were exhumed from a military mass grave in France and brought to Wellington. This is the memorial service at the Anglican Cathedral of St Paul, headed by the Dean of Wellington. The unknown warrior was then given a full military funeral procession and reburied at the National War Memorial.
