Signing the Treaty of Waitangi

Image
Signing the Treaty of Waitangi

The signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840 was re-enacted in 1923 in Wellington for the East and West Missionary Exhibition. This tableau (image with living figures) shows a Māori chief signing the treaty, while a missionary and another chief shake hands. Anglican missionaries were prominent at the initial 1840 treaty ceremony, and Henry Williams encouraged a number of influential chiefs to sign the treaty.
