The Māhinārangi meeting house at Tūrangawaewae marae, in Ngāruawāhia, was intended to be a Māori hospital when it was built in 1929. Its creator, Waikato tribal leader Te Puea Hērangi, wanted to established a European-style hospital in a Māori setting to help improve the health of her people. However, health authorities turned down her application to use the building as a hospital and it was devoted to other purposes.
