Formed in 2000 out of a support group for migrant and refugee women, the Shakti Asian Women's Centre serves the needs of Asian, Middle Eastern and African women. It provides a 24-hour nationwide domestic violence hotline, several safe houses, counselling, translating, and other services, including advocacy. These photos show the Shakti jumble stall and parade float at a community festival in Mt Roskill, Auckland, in the early 2000s. Addressing the crowd is then Prime Minister Helen Clark, who was also the local MP.
