Waikato Hospital paediatric surgeon Askar Kukkady (centre) works with colleagues to separate conjoined twins in October 2004. The result was successful, and the two children now enjoy a normal life. The major procedure, which involved nearly 40 staff – including seven surgeons, four anaesthetists, nurses and other team members from Waikato and other hospitals – required five months of planning. It was a triumph for Waikato Hospital, which provides specialist services to Waikato, Coromandel Peninsula, King Country and Rotorua.
