Smoking section in Dunedin pub

Smoking section in Dunedin pub

Smoking is the most preventable cause of death for New Zealand men. An amendment to the Smoke-free Environments Act in 2003 banned smoking in indoor workplaces and in indoor areas of pubs, restaurants and other hospitality venues. The response of some Dunedin pubs was to make the outdoor spaces as comfortable as possible for smokers faced with cold winter nights. The Kensington Tavern, shown here, provided a pool table, heaters and a television set. Such measures probably do more for sales of alcohol, another common cause of men's death, than for the health of pubgoers.
