Ivan Sutherland, 1934

Pākehā cultural go-between Ivan Sutherland stands second from right (in hat and glasses) at a hui in the 1930s at Tokomaru Bay on the East Coast. The hui welcomed visitors from the Cook Islands, some of whom are seen in this photo. Professor Sutherland's publications on the status of Māori in New Zealand society, and his working relationship with Apirana Ngata, made him unusual among Pākehā academics in the early 20th century.
