These giant paper lanterns, specially made in China, flew above the participants in the 2009 Lantern Festival in Auckland's Albert Park. The festival, held annually since 1999, marks the end of two weeks of Chinese new year festivities. It is organised by the Asia New Zealand Foundation in partnership with Auckland Council. Ethnic groups such as the Chinese, who are visually and culturally distinct from Pākehā or Māori New Zealanders, are increasingly prepared to celebrate those differences as part of a more diverse and vibrant society.
