Tasman district police commander Grant O’Fee speaks at the 2004 unveiling of a memorial at Kōwhitirangi on the West Coast to the men killed by local dairy farmer Stanley Graham in 1941. On 8 October, after a neighbour reported Graham for threatening behaviour, four police officers arrived at his property and were shot. William Cooper, Frederick Jordan and Percy Tulloch were killed, while Constable Edward Best was wounded and died later. George Riley, an agriculture inspector, was also shot when he arrived at the house, and died from his wounds in 1943. Graham disappeared for a day and then returned to the house, where home guardsmen Richard Coulson and Gregory Hutchison confronted him. After killing Coulson and fatally wounding Hutchison, the wounded Graham fled into the bush. He was sighted, then shot and fatally wounded on 20 October.
