Protest against family violence

Protest against family violence

On 25 November 2008 people in Henderson, Auckland, marched through the streets as part of a White Ribbon Day protest against family violence. White Ribbon Day was initiated by a group of men in Canada in 1991, and was recognised by the United Nations as International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1999. Unifem New Zealand organised the first White Ribbon Day events in New Zealand. Many organisations, including the Families Commission (later called Superu), Women's Refuge, the YWCA, the National Network of Stopping Violence Services, the Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International, work together on the White Ribbon Campaign. Half a million white ribbons are distributed each year, symbolising a world without violence towards women and children.
