People in Henderson, Auckland, march against family violence on 25 November 2008, White Ribbon Day. Initiated by a group of men in Canada in 1991, White Ribbon Day became the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women in 1999. Unifem New Zealand organised the first White Ribbon Day events in New Zealand. Organisations such as the Families Commission (later called Superu), Women’s Refuge, the YWCA, the National Network of Stopping Violence Services, the Human Rights Commission and Amnesty International work together on the White Ribbon campaign. Each year, they distribute half a million white ribbons which symbolise the goal of a world without violence towards women and children.
