Basket-making workshop

Basket-making workshop

The staff of W. Cook's basket-making workshop in Christchurch pose outside their premises, about 1907. Basket making almost disappeared after the introduction of plastic and other more convenient packaging materials, but was once vital for supplying strong, custom-made containers. The large hampers against the wall were used for transporting mail, and the workshop also made a variety of cane chairs.
