The Naseby branch of the Bank of New South Wales was designed by the local bank managers. A small-town bank whose main customers were gold miners had no need for regal premises. Australian banks have a long history in New Zealand and many were established in response to the Otago gold rush, buying gold from miners. During the gold rushes of the 1860s the Bank of New Zealand, the Bank of Australasia and the Bank of Otago also opened for business.
