In the  years after the Second World War, the government actively supported industry in a variety of ways, including the development of industrial areas and infrastructure. Both are visible in this 1950 photograph of Penrose, Auckland, which shows the area’s mix of agricultural, residential and industrial use, along with construction work on the city’s southern motorway.
