New Brighton beach, 1910

New Brighton beach was just a tram ride away from the centre of Christchurch, so it attracted large crowds from the city on a hot summer's day. In this scene the attractions of the surf have been supplemented by a 'witches' hat' for people to ride and a stall selling fruit.
