Timber is treated (tanalised) to make it last longer, using copper, chrome and arsenic mixed in water. These workers are about to load a pallet of stacked radiata pine timber into the blue tanks at this treatment plant, where it will be immersed in preservative and pressurised. Treating timber extends its life for decades. As radiata pine rots very quickly if it gets wet, treated timber is used in exterior wall framing of houses. Interior walls are untreated timber.
