Schools, churches and other community and charitable groups have held fairs and jumble sales since the 19th century. These events had stalls selling an array of new goods, crafts and home baking as well as the ever-popular second-hand stall. This photograph from the 19th or early 20th century shows a jumble sale at the town hall in Stratford, Taranaki. Books and artwork are displayed in the foreground, and the decorated stall holds clothing and other domestic items.
