A display of electrical goods features in the Christchurch shop window of Turnbull & Jones Ltd around 1917. These were the early years of electricity supply, with fewer than 20,000 consumers nationwide. The signs in the window exhorting the benefits of electricity illustrate this – ‘no smoke, no dirt, no work’ and ‘the old order changeth giving place to the new’.
